The mountaineering village of Prägraten am Großvenediger is located in the rear Virgental valley, surrounded by over 60 three-thousand-metre peaks. It is part of the Hohe Tauern National Park and, as a certified member of the Austrian Hiking Villages, offers everything you need for an unforgettable hiking experience in East Tyrol. It is astonishing that Prägraten am Großvenediger is the fourth largest municipality in East Tyrol in terms of area, but only has around 1,140 inhabitants. Freedomseemslimitless here! This means you have enough space on your vacation to indulge in your outdoor experience.
As the name suggests, Prägraten lies at the foot of the Großvenediger (3,657 m) - the so-called "World's OldMajesty". The mountain was given this resounding nickname by its first climber, Ignaz von Kürsinger. However, this is not the only impressive peak in the rearmost village in the Virgental valley, there are many other worthwhile high mountain tours, such as the Rainer Horn (3,559 m), the Schwarze Wand (3,503 m), the Hoher Zaun (3,451 m), the Kristallwand (3,310 m), the Weißspitze (3,300 m) and many more.
The Venediger Group is the largest contiguous glacier area in the Hohe Tauern and characterizes the landscape of Prägraten. The Isel, the last free-flowing glacial river in the Eastern Alps, is fed by the mountain group, among others. If you would like to get to know the river better, we recommend hiking the Iseltrail long-distance hiking trail.
